Stockholm weekend

Weekendtrip to Stockholm

I often get questions what to do when you visit Stockholm for a weekend so therefore I would like to share my favorite things to do in the city. Exclusively for you.  My handpicked top destinations from waking up to going to bed.

Training

If you would like to do as the locals and like to run or powerwalk, take a tour around the island of Kungsholmen. There are well paved routes at the 10K track and impossible to not find the way without a map due to all joggers and walkers.  The tour gives you a feeling of being local as well as scenic spots to take photos at so bring your camera. If you would like to go further for running I recommend Ursvik extreme for a trail run or Ulriksdals castle for a historical and green tour.

If you are more into studio training I would recommend Sturebadet for SPA and training and for yoga, I would recommend a visit to Urban OM. And my very best tip during the summer months is to try out SUP yoga or kayaking.

Breakfast & brunch places

Having brunch and breakfast outside of you own place is getting more and more popular and new places are added to the breakfast and brunch scene all the time. Among the best places are in mine opinion these ones: for pancakes – Sirap, nice food Pom & FloraSTHLM brunch club, Greasy spoon, or grab some items of your choice at the combined store and food place Urban Deli.

Be prepared to wait in line at all places if you are not arriving early.

Sightseeing

There are plenty of things to see and do. My summer favorite is to rent a bike and bike around the city. I would recommend a tour around Djurgården where you can stop by for a Swedish fika at one of the many coffee places like Blå porten or Rosendals trädgård. Have a visit to the amusement park Grönalund, visit the must see Vasa museum or just enjoy a rosé wine at Strandbryggan and do people watching.

If you are fed up biking, then make a stop at Strandvägen 1 which is a great place for resting tired legs and have something to eat and drink while watching the Stockholm people passing by. It is located closely to the upscale area Östermalm which is worth a stop if you are up for shopping for shopping.  If you wanna do shopping this is the best area including the famous department store NK which is a must see. When being in the city me and a non-museum fan would actually recommend some museums to visit and it is the photo museum Fotografiska, Hallwylska where you find tons and tons of things that an old lady collected and kept track of (interesting and free) and I think that Moderna museet is worth a visit (I have not been there though but heard it is great). Then you should of course not miss out the old city. It is not all for tourists but be prepared for a lot of souvenir shops. Make a visit to the castle. At one side of the old town you find Slussen which is a great photo spot. Worth doing is also to take a walk to the other side and check out the more alternative part of Stockholm Södermalm where you find hip cafés, bars and shops. Then when you are back in the core of the city I would recommend to check out the city hall where the Nobel dinner is held the 10th of December every year. When that is done my list of must see’s in the inner city is done if you do not feel for mingle around with other tourist that are spending their shopping money at Drottninggatan.

Other things that are nice to do is doing a kayaking tour around Kungsholmen or visit the park Haga Parken for a picnic or checking out where our prince and princess lives and taking a boat tour in the city, strolling around having a coffee with locals at Rörstrandsgatan, visit the archipelago where the island of Fjäderholmarna is the most convenient to get to and Sandhamn is worth a day trip (especially in the summer months). I also read that Stockholm is getting known as a destination for indoor climbing so if you are into that there are a lot of climbing places to explore.

Dinner places

If planning to eat out in Stockholm during a weekend (or evening) you should book your table in advance. My top eating places are Miss Von (asian fusion, great but expensive), East (asian fusion), Meno Male (best pizzas at a cozy place in Vasastan), Riche (best meatballs), Vapiano (if you like pasta and pizza and cannot find something else), Flippin’ burgers (best burgers) or Ki-Mama (real Japanese sushi but not a nice place to sit down).

Bars and clubs

The bar and club scene is pretty good here but every time I am going somewhere I forget about all places and nowadays the usual stop becomes Haymarket in the city center due to its good location and nice interior. It is a great stop for an afterwork. At the hotel Scandic Continental there is also a great rooftop bar worth visiting for a drink. In the summer I love to hang out at Kungsholmen especially at Hornsbergsstrand bringing your own drinks or going to Pieren for food and drinks or Mälarpaviljongen where you basically sit at the water. For more upscale bars in the city center I like Nosh and Chow or Grand Escalier at Stureplan. Nowadays I am not clubbing often at all but when I have friends over for visits I bring them to the clubbing area Stureplan where Berns, Sturecompagniet and Rose bar are among the places we visit.

  1. Moderna Museet really is something nice place. I would recommend going there around lunchtime as their restaurant offers a great view on Östermalm and Djurgården. At noon they offer a buffet which is very good. You can also stop by for fika. I often take friends there that are visiting Stockholm for the first time 🙂
